Pitched roofing: natural and fibre-cement slates
What homeowners should check when selecting, repairing or replacing slate roof coverings.
This is general information, not a survey, design, legal or Building Control decision. The correct scope and standard depend on the property, work, date and regulatory route.
Slate roofs depend on the slate type, gauge, lap, fixing method, roof pitch, exposure and sound supporting battens or sarking. Natural slate has variable geology and grade; fibre-cement slate is a manufactured product with its own fixing and cutting requirements.
A repair should match the existing covering and preserve head-laps, side-laps, fixings and ventilation. Replacing isolated slates without checking slipped fixings, corroded nails, failed underlay or timber movement can leave the cause untreated.
Ask for the proposed product, fixing schedule, exposure assumptions and details at abutments, valleys, ridges and verges. Manufacturer installation guidance and the roof design—not a generic slate count—controls the specification.
