Post-winter boiler and heating checks
Safe homeowner checks after heavy heating use, and the point at which an engineer should take over.
This is general information, not a survey, design, legal or Building Control decision. The correct scope and standard depend on the property, work, date and regulatory route.
Check for visible leaks, unusual noise, radiators that remain cold, repeated pressure changes, error codes and staining around valves or the boiler. Confirm that external condensate and pressure-relief discharge routes are not obstructed, but do not dismantle components.
Clean accessible filter strainers only where the manufacturer's instructions permit it, note the pressure and controls, and arrange the annual service if it is due. A powerflush should follow diagnosis of circulation or contamination problems; it is not a routine seasonal treatment.
Gas appliance servicing, flue inspection, combustion checks, repairs and any work inside the boiler case belong to a Gas Safe registered engineer. If gas is smelled, follow the emergency guidance from the gas emergency service and do not operate electrical switches.
