Structural steels in alterations

Why beams need calculations, bearings, temporary works and inspection.

This is general information, not a survey, design, legal or Building Control decision. The correct scope and standard depend on the property, work, date and regulatory route.

Removing a wall or opening a loft can transfer loads into beams, posts, walls and foundations. A structural engineer should specify the member, bearings, connections, padstones and any strengthening.

Temporary propping and the installation sequence matter as much as the final beam. A builder should not select a steel size from a span alone or rely on a generic online table.
