Window systems, glazing and performance
Comparing uPVC, timber and aluminium profiles alongside thermal, acoustic, daylight and security considerations.
This is general information, not a survey, design, legal or Building Control decision. The correct scope and standard depend on the property, work, date and regulatory route.
uPVC, timber and aluminium systems have different sightlines, maintenance, strength, thermal-break and repair characteristics. Compare the complete tested window system—not a frame material in isolation—including glass, spacers, seals, drainage, hardware, installation and warranty.
Double or triple glazing can improve heat loss, noise control and comfort, but acoustic performance depends on pane thickness, cavity, frame, vents and the actual noise source. Security depends on the complete product, locks, laminated glass where specified, hinges, restrictors and fixing into the opening; a headline glass specification alone is not a security assessment.
Check opening sizes, ventilation, safety glazing locations, escape windows, thresholds, reveals, condensation risk and junction insulation. Ask for the declared U-value, acoustic rating where relevant, security standard and installation detail, and ensure the selected product suits the existing wall and planning or conservation constraints.
