Party Wall basics for building work

When work near a boundary or shared structure may need formal steps.

This is general information, not a survey, design, legal or Building Control decision. The correct scope and standard depend on the property, work, date and regulatory route.

The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 can apply to work on a shared wall, boundary structures or certain excavations near a neighbour's building. Whether it applies depends on the design, distances and neighbouring structures.

Notices, consent, a surveyor or an Award should not be assumed from a project label alone. Give neighbours and appointed professionals enough time, and keep Party Wall advice separate from planning and Building Control advice.
